The largest and best-known pile-dwelling village of the three sites submerged in Lake Monate (7000 square meters and more than 4000 piles), was discovered in late 19th century by a local fisherman. Since 1990 new underwater archaeological surveys have been conducted by the Sopraintendenza, conducting research on the entire settlement, which was mainly built from oakwood. The investigation revealed the presence of concentric palisades that enclosed the village on the landwardside. This is an organisational feature that is common to Sabbione and other pile-dwelling settlements found on the shores of Swiss lakes. Two huts were also revealed, both with a rectangular plan (3 x 5 and 4 x 8 meters) and built within a period of about ten years.
