CH-FR-04
Haut Vully, | Motier I
Short Description
The station is mainly preserved on dry land. To the south, on the lake side, the remains have been completely eroded away at the current shoreline. The northern boundary is difficult to define due to the embankments deposited along the former shoreline. Core samples taken in the 2000s revealed an anthropogenic layer in very good condition, more than 70 cm thick in places. Its extent has been recognised over an area of more than one hectare. The archaeological layer is deep and well preserved. This pile-dwelling settlement provides a wealth of essential information about the northern shore of Lake Murten, where pile-dwelling sites are still poorly understood.
Special Features & Highlights
In the second half of the 19th century, numerous objects were collected from the exposed shore at the Môtier I site, including a large number of polished stone axe blades. These remain the only known artefacts from the site to this day.
