10 years World Heritage Years in Switzerland: Workshops & Guided Tours at the Laténium

To mark this year’s World Heritage Days, the Laténium is hosting a day entirely dedicated to life in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages.
Techniques, skills and various aspects of everyday life for people living several millennia ago will be brought to life through a range of activities.

Programme

10.00 - 12.00 und 14.00 -16.00:
‘Off to the lake!’ Build your own little Roman boat from recycled materials and discover how people used to sail.
Ages 8 and over (book by emailing inscriptions.latenium@ne.ch).

 

10.30 und 16.00:
A short guided tour of the ‘Sunken Villages’. Discover the hidden treasures of the Neolithic and Bronze Age pile dwellings. The tour offers an insight into the daily lives of the first farmers and explains why these sites, which are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, need to be protected.

 

10.45:
‘When the past resurfaces: underwater excavations of a Roman cargo found off the shore of the Laténium’.
Lecture by Fabien Langenegger, archaeologist at the Office of Archaeology of the Canton of Neuchâtel (OARC).

 

11.00 - 17.00:
Prehistoric ‘do-it-yourself’.
A demonstration of how to make harpoons, fishhooks, fishing nets and fish traps, held around the recently renovated Bronze Age house.

 

12.00:
Common picnic

 

13.30:
Guided tour of the Laténium’s publicly accessible storage facility with Sonia Wüthrich, the cantonal archaeologist.
During the tour, she will present some of the artefacts from the Roman cargo that was recently recovered from Lake Neuchâtel.
